Qualifications:

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Degree in forestry, forest science, fire ecology or natural resource management or a related discipline and 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in research and development, innovation and financial/economic analysis.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
    • experience negotiating agreements;
    • Emergency Management experience;
    • BC Wildfire Service experience.
Duties:

As stewards of British Columbia’s forest and range resources, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development (FLNR) is responsible for ensuring that the use of forests to generate economic benefits is balanced with the long-term health and sustainability of the forest and range resources.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is a unique area of government tasked with the responsibility of preventing, managing and suppressing unwanted wildfire on the landscape. Approximately 1,600 field workers - comprising technical experts, strategic thinkers and fire operations staff - are dedicated to undertaking the BCWS mandate in delivering effective wildfire management and emergency response support to protect life and values at risk, encouraging sustainable, healthy and resilient ecosystems.

The Research and Development Senior Officer is responsible for the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of a BCWS research and development program; working collaboratively with internal/external stakeholders and partners to direct research that better supports wildland fire response, prevention and mitigation through rational and fact based decision-making and which, ultimately positions the province to better anticipate and respond to the challenges ahead.
