Qualifications:

Qualifications for this role include:

  • University degree in biological sciences or equivalent.

  • Experience in conducting environmental monitoring and assessments. Preference may be given to applicants with 2 or more years of this experience.

  • Registered (or immediately eligible to register within six months of employment) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in BC with the College of Applied Biology.

Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.

Duties:

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for:

  • leading programs that maintain and enhance the quality of the Province's water, land and air;

  • maintaining the relative abundance and biodiversity of the Province's ecological systems inside and outside of protected areas; and

  • managing the Province's parks and recreation program delivery.

Parks and Protected Areas (PPA) Regional Operations is the delivery arm for BC Parks, including all front country and backcountry recreation services and is the primary interface with First Nations, parks facility operators and stakeholders.

As the Conservation Specialist, you will develop, coordinate and provide expert advice and guidance for ecosystem conservation, restoration and management in parks and protected areas.

Supporting your region, you will identify key conservation management actions for Annual Management Plans, and provide input, information and expertise to support the Parks and Protected Areas section and into management planning processes led by regional planners.

In this role, you will identify and communicate the role the park plays in landscape level conservation initiatives, liaising with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development ecosystems staff on broad level conservation objectives and how parks fit within those strategies.

Regional Planning Section Head

Salary $66,200.03 - $75,658.71 annually, plus a 3.3% Temporary Market Adjustment

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in planning or natural resource management related field, and 2 years of related experience; OR,

  • Bachelor's degree in planning or natural resource management related field, and 4 years of related experience.

Related experience includes:

  • Natural resource planning, such as land use planning, park management and park systems planning, recreation planning, impact assessments, and public and stakeholder involvement programs related to land use issues.

Duties:

One permanent, full time position is currently available. This position can be located in either Fort St John or Prince George, subject to the successful candidate's current location and Ministry operational requirements.

  • The Regional Planning Section Head is responsible for leading BC Parks' regional planning program in all aspects of strategic and land use components of operational planning for parks and protected areas.

  • The Regional Planning Section Head provides vision, anticipates future needs, is the regional lead for land use planning, contributes to the development of the provincial planning program, coordinates regional involvement in First Nations initiatives and treaty negotiations, and is the primary contact for planning functions with staff, agencies, the public and industry.

  • The Regional Planning Section Head recognizes the interdisciplinary nature of their functions and ensures close coordination of their role across the Conservation, Operations, and Recreation Sections in region and between regions, headquarters and other government agencies.

  • Given the many potential roles and expectations of the Regional Planning Section Head, periodic and annual work planning, guided by ministry, divisional and regional business plans, will be required to ensure balance between priorities and the successful achievement of results.
