Qualifications:
  • Completion of a Bachelor degree in Natural Resource or Environmental Studies with at least three (3) years of relevant work experience or as an equivalent, completion of Technologist Diploma in Natural Resources or Environmental Studies with four (4) years of relevant work experience.
  • Applicants with a professional biologist designation would be an asset.
  • Must be eligible for the Biologist in Training designation with the College of Applied Biology.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License required.
  • Experience with extensive driving, including off-road driving, and previous all-weather outdoor work experience will be required.

Duties:
  • Prepares terms of reference, budget estimates, related analytical and other research reports.
  • Prepares work plans, work schedules and implements portions of programs for mitigating and/or compensating for the effects of new and existing BC Hydro facilities and construction, operations and maintenance activities, on fish, wildlife, and other natural resources and systems.
  • Conducts field reviews and inspections of construction, operations, maintenance and waste management/pollution prevention activities.
  • Participates in environmental reviews of operating facilities to identify potential environmental impacts and associated mitigation methods.
  • Communicates with administrative, engineering, regulatory, agencies, First Nations, public groups, program and technical staff regarding the impact and ramifications on facilities and operations on a variety of natural resources.
  • Provides biological and/or scientific information at public meetings, license hearings, and to program or environmental groups.
  • Is deployed to the field to respond to unforeseen environmental concerns by helping to direct mitigation by assigning tasks to others.
  • Provides technical direction and expert advice to area/program or cross-discipline staff at the technical committee level or contractors involved in assigned projects.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have:

  • A relevant university degree or post-graduate degree in a relevant science.
  • Is a registered Qualified Environmental Professional in the Province of BC.
  • Registration as a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) (preferred), or the ability to obtain the CPESC designation within 6 months of employment.
  • A solid understanding of and experience with the relevant legislation, guidelines and current practices for Erosion and Sediment Control.
  • A minimum 8 years of experience in a relevant environmental field including experience in implementation and data collection in the field research and scientific study, investigative techniques, ESC prescription development and inspection, report preparation and project management.
  • A comprehensive understanding of issues relating to Erosion and Sediment Control, in a regional, provincial and federal context and demonstrated experience leading small to large scale projects throughout all project phases including those undergoing EA or CEAA review.
  • Advanced technical writing skills, preparation of technical reports, including reports for regulators and senior level management, and status reports.
  • The ability to manage, liaise and negotiate with contractors, regulators, stakeholders and First Nations on matters having a bearing on Erosion and Sediment Control issues.
  • The ability to provide recommendations to all project disciplines on matters having a bearing on Erosion and Sediment Control issues.
  • An awareness of and interest in BC Hydro's strategic direction, environmental policy and programs.
  • The ability to communicate with strong verbal and written communication skills technical information in public meetings, consultation or hearings.
