Wages:

$31.65 - $39.45 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications as per the BCGEU Faculty Collective Agreement. Temporary employees receive an additional $0.50/hour in lieu of benefits, 6% vacation pay and 4.2% statutory holiday pay included with each pay.

Qualifications:
  • Requirements for this position include a Masters’ Degree in a related field and 3-5 years’ experience in the post-secondary education field or a related field. A combination of education and related experience may be considered.
  • Experience and training in learning assistance, learning strategies and retention is essential.
  • The Learning Support Specialist must have a thorough knowledge of the local, regional and provincial resources available to students and be able to refer students to others within the college and to outside agencies as required.
  • Proven ability to work positively with a demanding workload, changing priorities, and continuous interruptions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, interpersonal skills and ability to multi task.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all individuals accessing the service.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office; proficient in Internet research.
  • Current Driver's License, and willingness to travel to other campuses as needed. 
  • Ability to make presentations and prepare presentation material is required.
Duties:

The Learning Support Specialist is a regional service reporting to the Director of Student Services and is responsible for supporting students learning and retention.

This individual will meet with students in person or via phone/Skype (for distance students) to help them identify barriers to their retention and assist them in developing the skills to overcome these barriers. This position will be responsible for creating and offering student success workshops to groups and one on one.

In addition to providing internal supports this person will be responsible for knowing what resources are available in the community in order to appropriately refer students to these resources as necessary.  This position also connects with community resources to provide on campus wellness education in areas such as mental health, substance abuse, etc. This individual works with students who have been placed on academic probation as well. 

This is a regional position that is based in FSJ. Travel throughout the region will be required year round. Some evening and weekend work may be required on a scheduled basis in order to meet student's needs.  This position also supports students in crisis which do arise from time to time.
