Crown Counsel 3: $146,616.13 - $168,366.78 annually (Years of Call 12 - 18 or greater)

Qualifications:

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the experience and/or achievements as outlined in the attached Job Profile including the following:

  • Crown Counsel 1: (Years of Call 1-5)
    Up to five years practical legal experience, preferably in the practice of Criminal Law.

  • Crown Counsel 2: (Years of Call 6-11)
    Between five and eleven years admission to practice, preferably in the practice of Criminal Law.

  • Crown Counsel 3: (Years of Call 12-18 or greater)
    Twelve years minimum admission to practice, preferably in the practice of Criminal Law.

Duties:

Become an integral part of BC's Prosecution Service (BCPS) in Fort St John, BC.

  • Fort St John - Crown Counsel Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3

The BCPS contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly, and by striving to develop the most effective methods to administer justice in the Province. The BCPS prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statutes in the Provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada.

Crown Counsel is responsible for the conduct of the prosecution of offences under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes and regulations, federal statutes and municipal by-laws from inception to conclusion, as assigned by the supervising Crown Counsel.

The position, if assigned charge approval duties, determines whether to lay charges, what charges to lay, and the conduct of the proceedings in court through to their conclusion, pursuant to Criminal Justice policies and the Crown Counsel Act.

Crown Counsel is responsible for ensuring that witnesses, victims and families are dealt with in a considerate and courteous manner and that victims and their families are adequately prepared for court proceedings.

The position gives advice and assistance to law enforcement agencies regarding the prosecution of offences and answers general inquiries from the public relating to criminal law or the prosecution of provincial offences.
