Qualifications:
  • Diploma in Social Work, Counselling or certificate in youth related field or at least three (3) years equivalent work experience.

  • Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector with a demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs and related provincial and community support services is preferred.

  • Level 1 First Aid and FoodSafe tickets.

  • Excellent interpersonal behaviour and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated teaching ability.

  • Organization, time and general management skills.

  • Written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Class 5 Drivers License with good abstract.

  • A moderate physical fitness level is a requirement of this position since direct delivery of services may involve walking, standing, kneeling, lifting.

Duties:

The Nawican Friendship Centre is seeking an energetic and dedicated individual for the Summer Student Youth Assistant position.  This position will encompass working with high risk, at-risk and all youth in general between the ages of 10-19, male and female who come from all cultural backgrounds.  The Youth Coordinator plans, develops and implements recreational, social, therapeutic, and/or educational progressive programming designed to mentor the youth to positive experiences.  The successful candidate will be working with youth and staff from different cultural backgrounds and will become part of our team of innovative, multi-cultural and supportive staff.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Intake interviews with youth/parent and/or guardian to assess youth suitability to programming.

  • Maintains appropriate records and statistics and ensures all required documentation is accurate and complete.

  • Support youth under the age of 19 in a safe and consistent environment.

  • Informal counselling and one-on-one support.

  • Improve life skills with youth through social/therapeutic activities, supportive counseling, and participation in community events.

  • Provides liaison with other agencies and the community, and fosters positive working relationships with staff members.

  • Provide advocacy support for our youth.

  • Promotes community programming.

  • Recruits and retains youth members.

  • May be required to transport youth group in company van.  Proper Drivers License and insurance coverage will be necessary for this position.

  • Incorporates literacy, behaviour management and life skills training within all programs.

  • Willing to participate in cultural events.

  • Maximizing resources of Elders, cultural teachers in a flexible grassroots-focus approach.

  • Research and create youth committee policy and procedures manual.

  • Research and create youth committee policy and procedure manual.

  • Encourage youth leadership, conflict resolution practice, and self-confidence within the established youth committee.

  • Provides accurate reports and meets deadlines in a fashionable manner.

  • Provides monthly reports for programs to the Board of Directors.
