Qualifications:

You are level headed team player who is calm under pressure and passionate about animal welfare. You are an excellent communicator and have experience in conflict resolution.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • **Must meet qualifications in order to be appointed as Special Provincial Constable under the Police Act**
  • Minimum high school diploma; Post-secondary education in social sciences, criminology/law preferred.
  • Previous law enforcement and/or investigation experience an asset.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License is required and current driver’s abstract must be provided if considered for this position.
  • Must be an Animal Welfare Officer (or equivalent).
  • BC SPCA Introduction to Cruelty Investigations Course (and passed Cruelty Investigators exam).
  • Minimum of 3 the following Justice Institute Courses (or their equivalent):
    • 703 Introduction to investigative skills and processes or
    • 706 Introduction to Animal Cruelty Investigations;
    • 704 Investigative interviewing;
    • 705 Report writing;
    • 710 Application and execution of search warrants;
    • 714 Advanced Investigative Interviewing;
    • 722 Forensic Imaging and Visual Evidence
  • Must have a genuine compassion for animals and sound knowledge of the Five Freedoms and related animal welfare standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and more common diseases.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal laws and regulations regarding animals, animal welfare and related activities.

Duties:

The BC SPCA is currently looking for a dedicated individual with excellent communication skills for the position of Special Provincial Constable (SPC) to work in BC’s Peace region. This permanent position involves investigating allegations of cruelty to animals, enforcing animal cruelty legislation, and treating animals humanely, with compassion and concern. As a SPC you will be expected to act as a Special Provincial Constable as defined in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and carry out the full range of duties of a SPC relating to all Federal and Provincial laws relevant to animals. The successful candidate must be approved by the Ministry of the Attorney General for appointment as a Special Provincial Constable under the Police Act.

This position will protect the welfare of all animals, the safety of the public and enforce all federal, provincial and municipal laws and regulations. You will ensure that all complaints are properly and promptly investigated and that all actions taken are recorded in sufficient detail. You will carry out cruelty investigations in an objective, effective and diplomatic manner.

You will respond to calls of both an emergency and non-emergency nature in an effective, efficient and caring manner. You will respond to situations using your knowledge of animal behaviour, animal handling techniques and proper use of rescue equipment. You will maintain accurate and legible case files and records and also ensure all requested reports, including statistical reports, are submitted on time to the Manager, Cruelty Investigations.

Duties:

The BC SPCA is currently recruiting for a full-time Animal Control Officer to work at our South Peace Branch located in Dawson Creek. The successful candidate for this position will respond to injured domestic animals so you must live in South Peace area & be familiar with the City of Dawson Creek. You must have knowledge of the City of Dawson Creek By-Laws, as this position requires animal control by-law enforcement.

You will respond to calls of both an emergency & non-emergency nature in an effective, efficient & caring manner. You will respond to situations using your knowledge of animal behaviour, animal handling techniques & proper use of rescue equipment. You must be able to foster & maintain good public relations & customer service with the public & be able to communicate effectively in a variety of situations in relation to this position. You are an energetic team player & are not afraid of hard work & you get things done. You care deeply about animals & are passionate about their welfare. You are an excellent communicator, have experience in conflict resolution & you always present a professional demeanour. Under the direction of the Branch Manager, you will:

You are an energetic team player who will participate in all animal care duties and ensure that optimal levels of care are administered to the animals based on the Five Freedoms. You have experience in customer relations and previous experience in animal husbandry. You care deeply about animals and uphold the highest animal care standards.

  • To ensure kennels, runs, and cat cages are kept in a manner that is best suited for the animal’s health and welfare as per the ShelterSense protocols.
  • To monitor the health and welfare of the animals through the maintenance of up-to-date kennel cards, recording information on whiteboard and daily logs, and completing daily welfare sheets.
  • To maintain animals on a proper diet ensuring daily feeding, watering, exercise, and enrichment.
  • To perform general bathing and grooming of animals.
  • To treat animals humanely, with compassion and concern, and in a manner consistent with the BC SPCA’s five freedoms.
