Duties:

The counsellor provides assessment, treatment, and referral services to people affected by substance abuse issues. The counsellor delivers service on an individual, family, couples, group, and community basis. The counsellor also delivers culturally safe and appropriate services, clinical consults, assessments, group facilitation, and public information sessions in the community.

Support Services:

  • Establish and implement program objectives and procedures in compliance with Northern Health Authority requirements.
  • Provide programs and services aimed at avoiding or reducing substance use and misuse, and all problems associated with substance use and misuse.
  • Provide a range of case management interventions in an outpatient community setting to include educational, therapeutic, and case management activities in a variety of settings in individual, group, and family formats.
  • Assess client needs, develop and implement treatment plans, and carry out regular review and updates to treatment plans relevant to individuals experiencing difficulties associated with substance use and misuse.
  • Document and maintain client records in a secure and confidential file.
  • Receive referrals in relation to individuals experiencing difficulties associated with substance use and misuse.
  • Make appropriate referrals to treatment centers and other associated programs or service providers.
  • Provide skills and knowledge necessary for clients to act as agents of change in their own life, to include increasing self-efficacy, internal locus of control, and resilience.
  • Promote health and wellness within the community of the Friendship Centre by coordinating the following:
    • Life Skills Workshops
    • Self-Empowerment Workshops
    • Motivational Workshops
    • Other Health and Wellness Workshops

Rehabilitation Services:

  • Provide scheduled appointments and regular open access drop-in sessions.
  • Provide follow-up, aftercare, and continuing care.
  • Encourage clients’ participation in ongoing community programs and constructive activities.
  • Identify and facilitate clients’ support systems.
  • Develop and provide educational programs and workshops that facilitate community awareness on alcohol and drug dependency.
  • Assist clients who need support in the following areas; family issues, education, employment, housing, and financial issues to the appropriate agencies.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Abide by the professional code of conduct in relation to counselling and related activities.
  • Adhere to the ethical standards established by the Nawican Friendship Centre.
  • Adhere to the confidentiality standards established by the Nawican Friendship Centre.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of all information pertaining to clients and their families.
  • Conduct discussions regarding clients only with authorized personnel.

General:

  • Keep current with information on alcohol and drug related issues by reading relevant articles, attending staff development sessions, attending conferences, etc., when possible.
  • Attend meetings as required and authorized including staff meetings, for the purpose of sharing information on the mental health & addictions program.
  • Provide monthly reports to the board of directors as well as monthly reports to funders.
  • Work with colleagues in promoting the Friendship Centre as a safe and welcoming place.
  • Utilize community resources and organize fundraising activities, ensuring there is adequate funds for events and promotion of activities.
  • Help with the daily activities of the centre such as maintaining the coffee/tea area, talking to participants, and building positive working relationships with youth.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and with external agencies with whom a working relationship exists.
  • May be asked to perform some of the necessary tasks of the Executive Director and other staff members in their absence.

The Nawican Friendship Centre (NFC) is seeking a highly qualified individual to manage and oversee the daily operations of the Centre and staff. Reporting to the Executive Director, the General Manager will lead the staff team and provide general oversight to ensure the operations of the Centre are managed effectively, efficiently and with a high degree of accountability.
