Job Title:

Stopping the Violence Counselor

Qualifications:

The Stopping the Violence Counselor will have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a related human/social service field as well as one year experience in a supervised setting;

  • A combined four (4) years of education and experience; or

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

The Stopping the Violence Counselor must demonstrate:

  • A high degree and awareness of ethical and professional conduct;

  • An understanding of family violence, the dynamics of emotional, sexual and physical abuse and family systems;

  • An awareness of art/play therapy;

  • Cultural, social and economic awareness;

  • Empathetic listening support qualities;

  • Tact and diplomacy;

  • Sensitivity and a non-judgmental attitude;

  • Good boundaries and self care practices;

  • A willingness to work flexible hours;

  • A strong understanding of and a commitment to a feminist informed practice; and

  • A person centered practical approach.

The Stopping the Violence Counselor will require:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Organization, prioritization and motivation skills;

  • Group facilitation and public presentation skills;

  • Excellent problem solving skills;

  • The ability to work independently and/or as part of a team;

  • The ability to work with people of diverse ages, cultures and personal situations;

  • Computer literacy in Excel, Word and email programs;

  • A valid Drivers License;

  • Crisis response training;
  • First Aid Certificate and Suicide Prevention & Intervention Certificate.

Duties:

The Stopping the Violence Counselor will provide safety and support to women who have been victims of various forms of abuse by:

  • Assessing the safety of the clients and their children and supporting clients in reducing their safety risks;

  • Providing counseling to women who have been victims of various forms of abuse;

  • Interviewing clients, preparing case histories, assessing problems and outlining services provided by the organization; and

  • Providing individual and group counseling to clients from a feminist and trauma based perspective using techniques such as therapeutic group counseling and self-skill workshops.
