The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor will have:

  • Bachelor degree in a related human/social service field as well as one year experience in a supervised childcare setting; or.

  • Four years combination of education and experience.

The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor must demonstrate:

  • A high degree and awareness of ethical and professional conduct.

  • An understanding of family violence, the dynamics of emotional, sexual and physical abuse and family systems.
  • An awareness of art/play therapy.
  • Cultural, social and economic awareness.
  • Empathetic listening and support qualities.
  • Tact and diplomacy.
  • Sensitivity and a non-judgmental attitude.
  • Organization, prioritization and motivation behaviours.
  • Good boundaries and self care practices.
  • A willingness to work flexible hours.

  • A strong understanding or and a commitment to the woman centered practice.

  • A person centred practical approach.
  • Capacity of working in extreme crisis and traumatic situations.

The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor will require:

  • Good group facilitation and public presentation skills.

  • Good verbal and written communications.

  • Good relationship skills with staff, professionals, and agency personnel.
  • Ability to work as a team member with staff, service recipients, police, social workers, hospital workers and other pertinent individuals or professionals.
  • Independent ability to use computers and familiarity with relevant software programs.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Crisis Response training.
  • First Aid certificate.
  • Suicide Prevention & Intervention certificate.
  • Understanding and competence in working with diverse cultures, particularly aboriginal people.


The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselor/Group Facilitator is responsible for:

  • The planning and provision of individual and group counselling to children and/or their parents who have witnessed violence.
  • Promoting community awareness regarding the impact witnessing violence has on children.
  • Prevention activities in schools.
