Qualifications: Experience, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Must be team player and must be willing to participate in company safety and production requirements.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of inventory control and inventory systems for parts management.
  • Familiarity with active construction sites.
  • Completion of a heavy duty mechanic apprentice and registration as a BC or Red Seal Journeyman.
  • Experience with Caterpillar equipment i.e. haul truck, dozer, excavators, etc.
  • Must have a valid Drivers License.
  • Experience with heavy duty mechanical work in a construction or mining environment.
  • Proven mechanical abilities in hydraulics and electrical, including schematics and diagnostics.
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations.
  • Able to pass any pre-access screening, including a Drug and Alcohol test.
  • Experience with civil construction, earthworks and concrete are all assets.
  • CSTS and other safety certifications are assets.
  • Previous experience on dam construction or large civil projects would be considered an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be physically fit and able to work in remote camp locations.
  • Outdoor work subject to extreme weather changes.
  • Must be willing to work 12 hour shifts, day and night.
  • Physically able to work outdoors performing hard labour tasks.
  • Must be able to work access/board equipment in areas with uneven ground or snow or soft-ground/surface water.
Duties: Reporting to the Maintenance Foreman, the Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible to repair, troubleshoot, adjust, overhaul and maintain mobile heavy-duty equipment on an active civil construction site.
  • Check bulldozers, cranes, graders and other heavy construction equipment for proper performance and inspect equipment to detect faults and malfunctions.
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions using computerized and other testing equipment to determine extent of repair required.
  • Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear.
  • Adjust, repair and/or replace defective parts, components or systems, using hand and power tools.
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturers' specifications.
  • Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment.
  • Service attachments and working tools.
  • Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions and crawler heads, using hand tools, jacks, and cranes.
  • Fit bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Perform repair work on heavy trucks.
  • Supervising, coaching and mentoring of apprentices.

Experience and Qualifications

  • First Aid ticket.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Provincial Blasting ticket.
  • Minimum of 5 years' blast experience in an open-pit mine, quarry or similar project.
Duties: Reporting to the Superintendent, the Blaster is responsible for blasting activities in an open-pit mine or quarry setting. Duties include loading blast holes in rock, loading blast holes with explosives, assembling primer charges and ensuring all safety requirements, regulations and procedures are followed for drill and blast activities.

Responsibilities

  • Read instructions or diagrams, lay out drill pattern and determine depth and diameter of blast holes and conduct field tests to determine type and quantity of explosives required.
  • Assemble or direct other workers to assemble primer charges using selected detonators, fuses, detonating cords and other materials.
  • Load explosives in blast holes by hand or direct movement of bulk explosives trucks to load holes.
  • Connect electrical wires, detonating cords or fuses into series and connect series to blasting machines; press handle or button to detonate charges.
  • Handle, store and transport explosives and accessories in accordance with regulations and ensure that safety procedures are observed.
  • May operate air-track, rotary, down-the-hole or other drilling machines to drill blast holes or may direct drilling of blast holes.
  • Ensure all equipment is accounted for daily.
  • Ensure sufficient supplies are gathered for the day.
  • Maintenance and care of all assigned equipment.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Active participation in all safety/tailgate meetings.

  • Drive and operate tracked or truck-mounted rotary drilling, air-track or other drilling machines to bore large blast holes to specified depths at staked positions in open-pit mine or quarry.
  • Operate drilling machines to drill blast holes in rock at road or other construction sites.
  • Operate tracked or truck-mounted drill equipped with auger or other attachment to drill holes for building foundations or pilings.
  • Measure location and stake out pattern of holes to be drilled, load blast holes with explosives and detonate explosives to dislodge coal, ore or rock.
  • Ensure all equipment is accounted for daily.
  • Ensure sufficient supplies are gathered for the day.
  • Maintenance and care of all assigned equipment.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork.
