Starting Date: Start date at work location is July 11 and ends August 25, 2017.
Wages: Some positions may be affiliated with the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE local 378) ( www.cope378.ca ); or the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW local 258) ( www.ibew258.bc.ca ); or non-unionized Management and Professionals (M&P).
Qualifications:
  • Strong focus and interest in pursuing a technical or trade occupation.  Must be able to demonstrate this through extra-curricular activities, hobbies and interests through volunteering or work experience or within a school curriculum program.
  • The successful candidates will have:
  • Graduation from high school with English 12, Math 11 and Science 11 (Physics preferred).  Acceptable Math 11 courses include Principles, Pre-Calculus, Applications & Foundations.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work is recommended.
  • Applicants must be available to travel to the Lower Mainland for mandatory safety training from July 4 to July 7, 2017.
Duties: The successful candidate will:
  • Always put safety first.
  • Perform simple technical or trade-related tasks as assigned by the appropriate BC Hydro employee.
  • Work with BC Hydro manager to explore technical or trade occupations.
  • Model BC Hydro core values.
  • Gain valuable exposure to trades occupations, such as Power Line Technician, Electrician, Meter Technician, Mechanic, Communication Protection and Control Technologist, Fleet Mechanic, OR
  • Gain valuable exposure to technical occupations, such as Power Engineering, Service & Design Assistant, Civil Inspection Assistant, Survey Assistant, Field Storekeeper/Materials Management, and Data Analyst.
  • Gain insight to technical career options, pre-apprentice and apprentice programs as a means to start a career with BC Hydro.
  • Be encouraged to further technical or trades occupations related education by enrolling in post-secondary technical or pre-apprenticeship training.

Some of the work locations include but are not limited to: Lower Mainland (Burnaby, Surrey, Maple Ridge, Coquitlam), Ft. St. John, Prince George, Fort Nelson, Bridge River (Shalath/Seton Portage), Peace Canyon & GM Shrum (Hudson's Hope), Vernon, Cranbrook, and Vancouver Island (Victoria, Nanaimo, Campbell River, Ganges).

NOTE: BC Hydro does not cover relocation or accommodation costs for the job-shadow portion of the program.  Some work locations may be in remote areas and it is recommended to have reliable transportation.
