Job Title: Wildlife Biologist

Wages: Salary $60,531.87 - $69,104.56 annually (plus $47.84 bi-weekly isolation allowance for Fort Nelson)
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences, natural resource conservation or management, including species and ecosystems biology, conservation biology, wildlife management and biodiversity, plus 3 years related experience, or
  • Master of Science degree in biological sciences, natural resource conservation or management, including terrestrial ecosystems, conservation biology, wildlife management and biodiversity, plus 1 year of related experience.
  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in BC with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
  • Possess a valid BC Class 5 Drivers License or be immediately eligible to obtain one.
Duties: The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Fish & Wildlife Section is charged with developing programs and initiatives which protect, restore and enhance the Province's natural fish and wildlife resources. This position provides support to the Fish and Wildlife Section Head by participating in the northeast Caribou Recovery Team and supporting other wildlife management initiatives in the regional office.

The  Wildlife Biologist:

  • plans, directs, coordinates and implements components of the Northeast Region's caribou program;
  • manages budgets, contracts and human resources;
  • provides professional advice and technical expertise on complex resource management issues to regional and program executives, other provincial and federal government agencies, First Nations, private industry, post-secondary institutions and public groups;
  • represents the program in resource development impact studies and in the development of major land use activities;
  • represents the ministry and program on federal/provincial public resource and land use committees, task forces and working groups; and performs other related duties.

  • Knowledge of forest management and wood fiber utilization.
  • Knowledge of government regulations, logging utilization standards, log scaling regulations and grading rules.
  • Strong math skills.

  • Ability to operate small and large equipment as needed.

EDUCATION

EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated experience in log scaling.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Plant or outdoor environment.
Duties: To maintain the quality control of incoming logs, control the log yard and related inventory. To ensure compliance of appropriate rules and regulations by truck drivers delivering logs to LP facilities.
  • Ensure accurate weighing of log trucks as they arrive and as they leave.
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate rules and regulations, ensuring drivers have appropriate licenses and certificates.
  • Inspect incoming logs to ensure compliance with LP log quality standards; coordinate with Forest Resources when standards are not met.
  • Coordinate work with off-loaders and truck drivers to ensure accurate inventory records are maintained.
  • Maintain log yard in an organized manner to ensure optimum inventory capacity.
  • Operate assigned equipment as needed to maintain the log yard.
  • Prepare daily and weekly reports.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
